A rare and historic original photographic image. This is an outstanding, one-of-a-kind photograph was taken during the late 1800s.

This original cabinet card features an image of a cooking fire in a historic hearth on the island of Nantucket, Massachusetts. It is dated 1880-1882 and is connected to the Rand family, an old Nantucket name and early 18th-century settlers.

Identified as an image from a home in the Village of Siasconset, Nantucket ('Sconset).

The hearth is blazing and (what appears to be in the foreground) a New England boiled dinner is about to be served.

Leather boots, a sturdy Windsor chair with an old Tyrolean hat perched on the edge...a fine Victorian still life!

According to the inscription on the back of the cabinet card, this original still life was photographed by a photographer by the name of Wyer of Yonkers, New York. It was gifted to an unknown recipient by Miss Marguerite Rand on 30 December 1938. The location was "identified by (illegible possibly Sevey or Severy) on 2/23/1979. The notation (as seen in the above photograph) on the back also indicates that this is a duplicate. This simply means that more than one photograph was made for the family as this is an original image.

The photograph is in excellent condition with minimal scratches. The cabinet card is simple cardboard and it has been pinned to a cord board or wall. The board is fragile and discolored, but the image mounted to it is without damage outside of the minor scratches and a very slight bend to one corner, lower right.

Otherwise, the sepia photograph is bright, sharply focused, and truly historic in nature.

It measures approximately 4 5/8" or 11.55 cm in height, and 7 1/2" or 19 cm wide.
