Signed, titled and dated 1884 in the plate. Added to Hamerton's book as extra illustration post publication date.
A crisp impression in fine, clean condition, free of repairs or restoration, printed on robust heavy grade paper, blank verso.
Approx. 9.5" x 6.5" (240mm x 160mm) to the plate mark with good margins beyond.
Maxime Lalanne (1827-1886) was a prominent French artist from Bordeaux who spent most of his working life in Paris.
He exhibited frequently at the Salon, the official exhibition of the Acadamie des Beaux Arts.
Much of his earlier work was in lithography and charcoal drawing, but he turned to etching in 1863 with immediate success and many awards.
His relationship with the highly influential Cadart Publishing house resulted in over 145 original etchings.
