Provenance
I am more than thrilled to be able to offer this fine collection of hand-carved wooden aboriginal works of fine art as well as two pieces of pre-Columbian pottery. This fine aboriginal wood carving is one of roughly 50 pieces of art that I am currently selling from the large and impressive collection of one Central Florida medical doctor. The provenance that accompanies this collection is wonderful coming from the personal collection of Dr. Carl A. Peterson who graduated from Hillsdale College & University of Michigan Medical School in 1943 and served in the Navy in the final days of WWII and later in Korea. Carl and his wife moved to the Panama Canal Zone to practice medicine for 10 years during the 1970s of which he personally acquired all works. He became incredibly close with different aboriginal people groups whom they gifted many carvings. Not only did he have a personal fascination with carvings but he also had a significantly large collection of Pre-Columbian pottery.
Carl traveled and collected the majority of carved aboriginal works from:
Leticia, Amazonas - Colombia
Easter Island, Chilean
Sambu River, Panama, Choco Peoples
San Blas Islands, Kuna Peoples
He also participated in many excavations uncovering many Pre-Columbian pottery examples from:
Chiriqui Province of Panama
Graves of Sitio Conte, Cocle Province
Madden Lake
Carl kept a handwritten journal documenting when and where each piece was acquired indicated by a combination of letters (identifying the place of origin) and a number (indicating the number piece from that particular region) seen either written on the bottom of each object or on a taped label. The people groups loved him so much he even has indicated that Chiefs had personally given him their personal items of affection. Carls also became close friends with Eva Harte whom he traded pieces back and forth with.
