This is another of my “urban totes,” intended to provide easy carry for all your small modern accessories. You know, the things that accumulate on your bedside table, or your dresser, or on your chair side table. Things like remotes, cell phones, chargers, pens, pencils, nail files, clippers, etc. Use it for art supplies, sewing or knitting supplies. Use it to corral your medicines.
I make these totes periodically to use up left over pieces of wood from larger projects. This one is 12 inches long by 7 inches wide by 11 inches tall. The body is made from offers Cherry and I sculpted the handle from Curly Maple. I used an assortment of different pieces of Cherry – some old (and darker) some new (and lighter). I used no stain, just letting nature determine the colors.
I made the handle on the is one taller than most – to accommodate taller items.
I've incorporated a single shallow drawer for loose stuff. The little amber glass drawer pull is interesting – it was handmade from a melted down liquor bottle. I traded a chest to a glass-worker several years ago for a supply of these handmade liquor-bottle knobs. I don't have many left.
To keep the drawer from falling out, I've incorporated one of my signature drop-pin drawer locks. Pull the little porcelain knob to remove the brass pin.
Lately, I've been using a form of mortise and tenon joint to attach the handle to the end supports. This one uses that approach.
I finished the piece first by sanding in Danish oil, followed by several hand-rubbed coats of TruOil®, a professional gunstock finish.
I lined the tote, including the drawer, with a colorful parrot fabric I found. The fabric is wrapped around removable hardboard inserts – so you can change the lining in future, if you want.
In my work, I strive to build heirloom quality items. I believe this piece meets the definition. Use it for a lifetime, then pass it on. As always, I've signed and dated the bottom and will include a signed Provenance Note for posterity.
The price cited includes an allowance for shipping. Even so, shipping to some places may exceed my allowance – and if so, I'll contact you with an estimate for the additional shipping cost. Please see my Shipping Policy. I ship via UPS ground insured, and I will have the item professionally packed.
