Sweet Swallow Brooch Gold Washed Sterling Pearl Accents Signed Piece
ITEM: A sweet little figural bird, a more contemporary version of the Victorian Swallow motif, from around late 70s to early 80s, in sterling vermeil and tiny pearls. This sweet petite pin has huge eye appeal as well as a very detailed design with feathering stamped or molded into the wings and tail, body and top of head. The design goes a long way towards creating the illusion of movement in such a static object, nicely formed with dimensional aspects that help convey its birdness. The eye is set with a tiny, twinkling clear stone and the branch carried in beak features tiny pearls depicting buds. Swallow motif jewelry of all types were a popular design throughout the Georgian and Victorian eras with their likeness showing up across all medium of decorative arts, not just jewelry. There is a language of jewelry, certain motif have hidden meaning known to those who give and receive the pieces that fit into various categories, from Love/Lovers, Marriage/Betrothal, Sweethearts, Cultural Identity, Groups, Clubs and Political Statements are but a few. Swallows and birds in general, had meaning or significance related to such ideals as Motherhood, Constancy, Safety, Security, Comfort and Care. The swallow in particular was seen as a good omen amongst sea farers, bearing thoughts of Safe Harbor, Land Ahoy and Leading Lost Sailors Home. Birds have always been a part of decorative arts because they are beautiful subjects and Some birds, like Raven for instance, feature largely in many Indigenous creation stories. I always try to obtain any bird jewelry I come across as I am an avid bird watcher and pet bird keeper. This particular piece is one of the better versions i have had on offer in awhile. Rich, lustrous gold over sterling, creating that golden glow, the textural aspects of the feathery details, the stylish outline and the visual impact all come into play here, combining to create a figural brooch of very high quality and style. Marked on back with a capital A and 925 for sterling. A sturdy pin back with roller clasp typical of the day. Just a great little pin!
SIZE: This pretty pin is a sweet petite, measuring 1 1/4” wide and 1 1/2” tall depending upon orientation when wearing.
CONDITION: In very good vintage condition showing minimal wear apparent. I see no dings or dents, breaks or bends, no missing stones and no signs of replacement or repair. I think the pearls might be real, likely freshwater cultured. I saw no issues with their nacreous coats, no flaking or peeling and no bald spots noted. The vermeil is rich and lustrous with no areas of loss noted. Does test as sterling likely a 14k overlay. The pin back and roller clasp are intact and functional. Stamped A925. A sweet, vintage take on a far older motif, Golden Swallow carrying a twig, done in the Victorian Revival style.
