In the early 1980s cigarette companies were spending heavily on marketing to connect their premium cigarette brands with a wealthy and fit lifestyle that appealed to consumers who aspired to achieve that lifestyle. That's when the companies began launching more discount cigarette brands to appeal to older and lower income heavy smokers who were not overly concerned with product image and more concerned with cost. And so began the race to introduce a dizzying array of new “price value brands”, culminating in 1990 with the introduction of Bucks.

From a marketing perspective you could not envision a better form of branding for this sector than with Bucks. With its comforting country red hunting cabin packaging, to its witty straight-shooter slogans focused on cost savings, and most importantly with the brand name itself…a play on a word that could be referencing the majestic animal, the dollars saved in your wallet, or a loyal friend you might smoke a few packs with over beers on a Friday night (perhaps Buck Russell from the 1989 comedy masterpiece “Uncle Buck”).
