offers This is the second version of a moku hanga print of endangered Red Knots and Laughing Gulls. The first version was printed on Masa Dosa, a brighter white paper and is also for sale in my store. This version uses Nishinouchi paper which is more of a tan natural color but which more easily accepts the watered down gouache that I use to print with.
Both are made using traditional Japanese woodblock(moku hanga) methods. This edition is 16 of which 10 are available for sale here.
(PLEASE NOTE: Though I've noted that the paper is printed on is 'natural' in color almost any photo of it, especially if seen on a backlit computer screen, seems to make it look a brighter white than it really is. The second photo which also shows part of the border is closer to the true color.)
Red Knots are an endangered species. I've primarily seen them on the Delaware Bay side of southern New Jersey, a well known and important stopping place for them in their lengthy migration to the high Arctic. I have done some previous art based on them but reading a newspaper account of how low their numbers were along the Delaware Bay in 2021 prompted me to make this print. I'm making it just because I love seeing these birds, along with the raucous Laughing Gulls that feed with them. But if it also convinces more people to pay attention to their drastic decline I'm happy with that as well.
