Fabulous Vintage Lithographed Biscuit Tin Courting Couple 1920's Octagon Cookie Container by National offers Biscuit Company
It was 1898 when 114 independent bakers from across the country joined together to form a new company called the National Biscuit Company. N.B.C. as they came to be called, and then later Nabisco, revolutionized how cookies and crackers were sold, wrapping their product in their In-Er-Seal waxed paper inside tin boxes of various shapes and sizes, rather than selling the loose crackers out of a barrel at the local store. These tins came in clever shapes or had lithographed scenes that enticed consumers to purchase them for reuse to keep their treasures in. Like our octagon shaped tin that dates to the 1920's. Featuring a haunting scene of trees on a hillside and a courting couple in Colonial dress silhouetted against a full moon rising in the background. The whole night sky, including the rising moon, consists of tiny dots like a throwback to the 1880's when Pointillism was the new thing on the art scene, to make an impression that lingers in your memory. In colors of black and burnished gold, the sides of the lid have an intricate vine around it and a clasp that holds the lid closed. The whole tin has a rich patina that speaks of its age and has some wear to the graphics and a little oxidation. These blemishes are seen in the photos. They speak to the character and the age of our tin. Measuring 7 1/4" x 7 1/4" across the top x 3 1/4" tall, our antique cookie tin has the embossed logo on the bottom offers that N.B.C. first used in 1918. The emblem is said to be a symbol used in Medieval times, indicating the triumph of good over evil that N.B.C. co-opted and remains the Nabisco symbol to this day. Our antique tin is perfect to hold sewing notions or your collection of smaller things like marbles, seashells or small linens. It will enhance any corner of your home or office with its gorgeous graphics that will evoke a vintage vibe that whispers of long ago.
