This is a delightful round watercolor and ink token removed from an album. Its shape and design are similar to early watch paper love tokens, made for inserting in the back of a pocket watch. It has a sweet leafy watercolor border and handwritten inside is an early charade question. Charades were quite popular in the early 1800's.
"My 1st is a preposition,
My 2nd is a composition,
And my total an acquisition." (Answer below).
It is set behind glass in a period lemon gilt frame. I can't tell if the piece is floating on the piece of matboard or if it is adhered. The frame is offers original and has not been cut down. It is tight but does show overall wear. The frame measures 4 1/2" by 5 1/2" and the sight size is 3" by 3 3/4". A previous owner wrote out how they interpreted the lines on the back of the piece, but they are incorrect.
Hint for first line "As the result of her uncle's will, she acquired a ____________."
Hint for second line "He composed a ______."
And answer is
Fortune!
