Charming little silver plated silent butler or crumb box with turned wooden handle and having a chased design on the lid, and rope effect decorative edges to the base and the lid. The lid is raised with the thumb piece that enables you to open it using just one hand.
The maker is shown to be P H Vogel & Co and this dates from mid 1900's.

These silent butlers were brought to the table between courses and any crumbs or ash would be swept into it to be taken away.
The interior of this one is very clean and surely has never had anything but a few crumbs inside for the briefest time!
In later years many of these were also used to whisk away cigarette ash too, but not this one, it has no lingering odour and is extremely clean inside.

Today you could possibly use this to offer small sweets from!

Good vintage condition, some plate wear to the lid from cleaning
