Usually found in pairs, flanking the entrances of doorways in palaces, the lamassu are winged bulls or lions, having the face of a man, wings of an eagle, and the body and legs of a lion or a bull. They are linked to the Assyrian kirubu, which comes from the word, karâbu, "to be near.” It means near ones, familiars, personal servants, bodyguards, courtiers.
