Vintage Walborg, 1960s, Black Tube-beaded Clutch Purse offers

A very elegant black, tube and round beaded, hand-made purse by Walborg, circa early to mid-60s. This purse is an exquisite vintage shape, just missing 4 tube beads on the back - see pictures. Lined in black silk, has an inside pocket, silver snap, and comes with a very long silver plated offers strap - 36”, which can be worn inside or outside of the clutch. This purse is all hand-beaded, weighty, and in great condition. Made in Hong Kong, there are mostly long tube beads with round beads on the closure and side edging. The closure beading is exquisite and made in a twisted pattern.

It appears to be very lightly used as it is perfectly clean inside. It has a single pocket, a snap closure and the lining is black satin silk, which is slightly padded underneath. It is 9.5” across the bottom, 9” across the top, 1” in depth at the bottom, and 5.5” vertically. The strap is woven silver plated chain, is 36” long and has a drop of 16.5”.
The condition is amazing! This bag was likely made in the early to late 1960s. The label reads Walborg, hand beaded in Hong Kong.

A little beaded clutch history:
“Walborg was a company founded by Hilde Weinberg in New York City in the late 1940s. She originally worked as a vice president for a cosmetics manufacturing firm and resigned in 1949 to study the handbag business for eighteen months before establishing her company. Walborg Corp. continued under her ownership until 1971.
Beaded purses were especially popular in the 1950s and 60s. Their production was first done in Europe. Manufacturers moved to Asia when labor there was found to be less expensive. The beading was performed in Japan and Hong Kong and later in China. Small clutches mostly served as evening accessories or were taken to special functions such as weddings and fancy parties. The intensive labor involved in producing such finely detailed work meant the purses were expensive status symbols.
Today beaded clutches are enjoying popularity again, especially among brides looking for a unique vintage design.”
