ThanksTopaz is an aluminum silicate mineral with fluorine. It is the November Birthstone and one of the harder gemstones so it wears well in jewelry. it occurs in a multitude of colors from clear, amber, pink, blue, etc. Sometimes smoky quartz is sold as smoky topaz but that is a false name.
These amber Chinese topaz crystals came to me as one of those serendipity events back in the 1990s. I had a shop in Dallas and a graduate Chinese student at UTD approached one offers of the geology professors about buying a batch of topaz he had found while home between college terms. They were from the Yunnan Province in China. He hoped to sell them to pay his tuition. The professor contacted me and we arranged the transaction. I've sold most of them, but kept a few as mementos and this is one of them. This one is actually two parallel crystals that have grown together. areas of gem quality and some areas with veils; it measures 2.5 x 1.6 inches and 1.2 inches thick. It weighs 7.1 oz or 200 grams or 1000 carats. It has a complex termination apparently where two crystals grew together and formed the imprint of the tip of another crystal. I sold most of these for 1.00 a gram, but am going to sell this one for 65 cents a gram. I don't believe you can find these anywhere else at near this price.
