In 1876, Wade Davis founded Wade Davis and Company in Massachusetts. Charles Whiting joins the company in 1880 and in 1892, designs their first mesh bag. Made totally by hand, the process was laborious. By 1912, they had invented a machine to do the meshing automatically.
In 1896, at the age of 32, Mr. Whiting purchases half the company and becomes partners with Mr. Davis.
From flappers to stars and anyone wanting to be noticed, a Whiting and Davis bag was a necessity. In the 1930's, the famed designer, Schiaparelli joined the company and stage and screen actresses became the largest patron of the beautifully executed bag.
After the war was over in the forties, Whiting and Davis resumed making their incredible bags. Jane Wyatt,and Beatrice Lilly were just two of their famous customers. Jane Russell once wore a dress designed by the company used the shiny mesh. The dress reportedly weighed over twenty pounds. No one offers seemed to mind.After Christie Brinkley wore an almost there dress on the cover of Cosmopolitan in 1983, Whiting and Davis was ingrained in the psyche of America. Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga and Paris Hilton to name a few have in their vast collection of purses a few Whiting and Davis Mesh bags. Sold at Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf and other ultra high stores, it is a mark of anyone who loves beautiful things. The latch of the purse is surrounded by crystal stones and the middle stone is a pale green .25K Tourmaline.
