Sail boat cuff links (cufflinks) made from upcycled vintage 1950s New Zealand postage stamps, sterling silver, and jeweler's grade resin – a one of a kind pair. These custom cufflinks make a great nautical gift for him.
The stamps set in these cuff links were first introduced by the New Zealand postal service on November 1, 1951. They were part of a decade long series of a health themed definitive series . The stamps feature a race between small yachts, set against a typical New Zealand coastal scene with the sun's rays prominently radiating from the top. The yachts featured on these stamps are of the Takapuna class, a special New Zealand design, with a specified length of 12 feet 6 inches, beam of 5 feet and a mast height of 12 feet 7 inches. They are of the V-bottomed type and the sides of the hull from the deck to the waterline are almost vertical. The rig is limited to a mainsail and spinnaker. This class competed for the Cornwell Cup, a trophy donated in memory of John Travers Cornwell VC killed in the Battle of Jutland in 1918. The age of the two crew was restricted to under 19 years of age and their combined weight to under 17 stone. The proceeds of the 'Health' value of these Health stamps were donated to the Children's Health Camps movement. The stamps have a 2 decimal denomination. They were designed by Wellington J Berry and Rangiora R S Phillips, and printed by Bradbury Wilkinson in England.
The boat cufflinks are handmade by setting carefully selected sections of the stamp in 5/8” (16 mm) bezel cups, which are soldered to sterling silver offers cufflink backings. Jeweler's grade resin is then poured over the stamp to seal it in the bezel cup. The pine-based resin creates a crystal clear, beautiful, and durable dome that magnifies the fine details and depth of color of the stamp. Each pair of stamps is unique and carefully matched.
