Antique BLACK FOREST FRAME ~ Walnut Cross Frame with Carved Leaves ~ w/ Childrenn offers Chromolithograph Print circa 1873 Signed B F Reinhart
This is a very nice Adirondack Black Forest walnut frame with the crossed corners and carved leaves. It has a gilded gold inner frame which shows appropriate aging.
The frame measures 15 7/8" x 13" to the outside straight edges and will take an 11" x 14" print. It has its original wood backing which does not look like it's ever been moved and still has its original small square nails.
The carved leaves in the corners actually look to be in good condition save the one in the lower left corner which has the upright tip broken off...but it was done at an angle so does not look obvious. The top left one has just slight chipping on its very tips but it's very minor.
It came with the print which I thought as an offers afterthought...however it is probably the one originally put into this frame and it's a chromolitho by a known artist, Benjamin Franklin Reinhart (1829 - May 3, 1885). He is a listed 19th century painter born near Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. He studied in Europe and was a student at the National Academy of Design in NYC. His genre included historical and portraits as subjects.
This print portrays a young girl mending a young lad's pants. It has warm beige tones and is printed on old canvas textured board with no glass as it was supposed to mimic the original oil painting. It is in decent condition with just very minor pin prick size blemishes.
It is signed in the lower left hand corner, "B F Reinhart 1873" and "From the American Agriculturist".
So this is kind of a "two-fer" ...a beautiful old frame which you could use for a different purpose...and you have the nice old chromolitho print which has value on its own.
