The Cloisonne egg "Plique à jour" is created in a French technique of light partitioned enamel made by hand with clear glass enamel placed inside small thread separations.
This little egg gem is in excellent vintage condition without damage or shine. It has always been presented inside a glass curiosity cabinet, and would be a great asset to a Chinese-themed décor or art collection, or for an egg jewelry collector.
What is Plique a Jour? The art and technique of creating transparent partitioned objects was developed in the Byzantine Empire in the 6th century AD.
The plique-à-jour is a technique of implementation of the enamel, similar to that of the partitioned, but without metal bottom in its final state, so that the light can filter through the transparent or translucent enamel.
This tedious hand-crafted art is considered very difficult, and each element takes months to make. The failure rate is very high, and the fragility of the articles means that few are still completely intact.
