This is one of the oldest most unique kettles I have ever seen - made from mainly heavy copper with a rounded or arched base so it does not sit flat, designed to hang above an open fire. the lid is like 2 lids one inside the other - The handle is copper and hangs from a small chain at each side - the finish of this piece is rough with two battered rivet like features holding the handle base on- this offers kettle is designed not to sit on a flat surface - it measures about 8 inches to the top of the lid. Never in all my years of collecting and dealing with antiques have I came across such an old kettle as this one, the design and make up of it is quite unique. This piece has been well and truly hammered. Hammered copper has a stronger surface strength than flat sheets of copper. This is because the small dents in the copper disperse the weight of any object over a wider area. This should not be seen as a weakness in the metal, but as a strengthening technique that has been in use for hundreds of years. Antique Primitive Copper Tea Pot Coffee Kettle with rounded base and the whole thing has a battered hand made appearance.
