Lovely Antique Silver and Taille d'epargné, Unisex, Celtic Scottish Thistle penannular brooch.
This hallmarked piece is from the 1870s and is 800 Silver or higher.
A Penannular is an ancient clothes fastener. The brooches were worn by both men and women, usually singly at the shoulder by men and on the breast by women.
Measuring 2 1/2" x 1 3/8", engraved swirls and thistle designs adorn the top piece. Black Enamel Tracery (Taille d'epargné) fills in the low-lying areas.
The Penannular pin works and holds securely.
Hallmarked in three places but not able to decipher. I believe this piece to be of European origin.
