Wonderful, exceedingly rare set of Five (5) Spode Byron platters. Priced individually, or buy all five and save.
Each piece in this series depicts a different scene of English country life.
I have learned the Byron pattern was seldom sent to the United States to be sold, which is why it's unusual to find, especially in a grouping like this.
The details are stunning and paint has been applied by hand in places in rich autumnal colors of walnut, goldenrod, green, blue, taupe, and pink. What a bucolic pastoral scene!
The two large (15.5” x 12.5” and 15” x 12”) platters have a brown transferware border of lattice intertwined with verdant ivy and bunches of grapes. The plates depict a English country farmhouse with thatched roof and ivy draping overhead. There are two women at the door, appearing to be listening in on the conversation between an elderly couple and the doctor, who has come to tend to their sick cow. There is a young girl (maybe the doctor's daughter) kneeling on the ground and either placing something in or taking something out of the open box in front of her, possibly helping her father in his professional duties.
The other three platters comprising this set are two (2) 10.5” x 13.25” platters and one (1) 11” x 9”0 platter.
These three platters depict three young girls crossing a stream on horseback. One girl rides assuredly by herself, the other girl is walking alongside her younger sister, perched a bit precariously atop the horse. To the left is their faithful dog. In the background is a quaint country cottage with thatched roof, where a person stands by the gate.
Condition is fantastic on all platters, no chips, cracks or repairs. I believe these hung on a wall as a focal and were not in use. Even the platters' green painted edge is intact. Only some very, very minor (typical) crazing attest to their 90-year age. A true find!!
Marked: Copeland Spode England Spode's Byron.
If you buy all five, shipping may increase. I have it figured for two platters. Thanks!
