This vintage German glazed ceramic plate from the 1930s features a navy blue “Persian ware” design on a creamy white background inspired by Dutch Delftware patterns. The plate is separated into three compartments by half-inch-high ridges, one for an entrée and two for sides.
In the 1920s and 1930s, German potteries created this style of plate for export to the United States to appeal to the large number of Americans of German ancestry. The earliest of these Delftware-inspired patterns were based on 19th century Persian patterns, hence the name “Persian ware.” Because this plate was made for export, the backstamp says “Persian Ware Made in Germany” in English. Production of these plates ended at the beginning of World War II.
This sturdy plate has no cracks or crazing. There are a few tiny rough spots on the rim created by grit caught under the glaze before it was fired in the kiln. The raised ridge between sections has one tiny round divot where a bubble in the glaze popped during firing, and one small chip, 1/8” wide by 3/8” long (see photos). Because the plate is white, the white ceramic under the chipped glaze is not very noticeable.
The plate is 10.5” diameter, and is 1” high at its highest point.
