A charming antique English garden book entitled, 'The Little Gardener' by Charles. C. Clarke, published in 1844 by T. H. Carter & Company, Boston., and Revised By The Editors Of The Popular Library. This copy is the First American Edition with delightful black and white engraving throughout the book as well as the frontispiece.
The book was written offers with the intent to educate the young to the wonders of nature, gardening, and the reverence for God. 'While learning to admire the beauties of nature, we hope they will also accustom themselves "to look through nature up to nature's God," and to entertain habitual love and reverence for Him, whose power and goodness are so strikingly manifested in all his works'
The chapters begin with the month of January to December telling the tale of Adam Stock and his son, who live in England, as they garden through the year, and each begins with a poem. Some of subjects include planting, bee keeping, forest trees, fruit orchards, May garland, and farm animals.
The hardcover book is covered in blue embossed cloth with gold gilt lettering on the spine. The overall condition is good for the age, although there is some foxing throughout, and measures; 4" x 6 1/2".
The previous owner's name is written in pencil on the second page, Emmeline Libby (18945-1928). She was the daughter of Lothrop L. Libby and Frances Knight, who lived in Westbrook, Maine.
