Unique hand thrown and altered porcelain pitcher with inlaid design and clear glaze offers. Decorated with whimsical bubble blower and bubbles floating around the outside of this unique piece. The process I use is called mishima or inlay. After throwing the piece on the wheel, I let it dry about half way and then I will hand carve the design I choose into the surface with an exacto knife. After completely drying, the piece will go through its first firing to around 1800 degrees Fahrenheit.
After the piece come out of the kiln, I give it its first sanding to help level the surface. Then comes the inlay! I paint the incised lines I have created with an engobe (like paint for clay). I build up several layers, let it dry, then wipe the excess off with a sponge, revealing my design for the first time. That is my favorite part! Then I apply the clear and colored glazes and fire the piece again to around 2300 degrees or cone. The result is a one of a kind, smooth to the touch, whimsical, useable ceramic object that will last a lifetime!
