Alpaca wool is a fiber so warm and unique that for hundreds of years many countries have tried to achieve it. However, they could not have herds of alpacas abroad. Alpacas never breed unless they live in virgin lands. Peru and Bolivia have signed international treaties to secure their monopoly on the alpaca as it is our national legacy.
For more than 3.000 years Peruvians have mastered the art of using this wonderful fiber.
Today, as it was 3.000 years ago, the women of the Sierra walk with their flocks and keep their hands always busy, spinning the alpaca wool with their pushkas. Raw wool goes along a stick with a circular base and after joining, it comes out as a thread that can be hand-woven or transformed into a beautiful textile or loom.
Alpaca wool, when handmade, is dyed with natural colors and then separated by colors. Using looms, craft producers make ponchos, rugs, blankets or knitting offers needles that produce warm sweaters. That's how they go to markets to sell them.
