The ancient art of encaustic painting starts with natural, self-sustaining materials. Bee's wax and aromatic Damar resin, which comes from the secretions of the Dipterocarpaceae family of trees in Southeastern Asia, are melted together to form the encaustic medium. By adding a variety of pigments to the medium it creates a substance that can be used like paint. The difference is that each layer must be fused to the painting with heat. Applying many layers of hot wax to the surface and fusing all the elements together creates a dreamy, almost ethereal quality and depth.
