Three tier classic Victorian afternoon tea cake stand, vintage Royal Doulton pastel green Tonkin pattern graduated tiered china plates tower is later interpretation of famous Coalport's "Indian Tree" iconic patter. It comes to my shop as addition to already listed Johnson Brothers three tier handmade cake stand using vintage circa 1940 famous Indian Tree pattern plates created by The Coalport China factory in 1801 and widely spread and used by different brands of pottery makers as it was one the most loved and desired patterns because of its exotic look, great combination of colours, vibrancy, great symbiosis of geometrical and floral influences in pattern design, sort of reflecting deep and rich history of powerful British Empire.
It was taking Europe and Britain (and England in particular) to the part of the World, where offers our tea culture roots are coming from - India and China: countries which introduced us and influenced our two most powerful passions towards immortal "nice cup of tea" and beautiful refined bone china to serve it in. This Tonkin pattern was manufactured for 17 years by the Royal Doulton China company, based in the UK. The currently discontinued Tonkin china pattern has a smooth look to it that is quite hard to find & gives off that perfect summery feel that cant be replicated. This pattern is one of the Royal Doulton companies more flowery looking patterns & is quite distinctive. The Tonkin pattern mixes & matches quite well with another pattern by the same manufacturer, the Royal Doulton Kingswood pattern which has as similar flowery design but its coloring leans more to the colder seasons. Indian Tree is a china pattern that was popular during the last half of the nineteenth century. It was copied from earlier Indian textile patterns that were very similar. The pattern includes the crooked branch of a tree and a partial landscape with exotic flowers and leaves. Green, blue, pink, and orange were the favored colors used in the design. The Coalport China factory created the Indian Tree design in 1801 and it was one of the most popular designs made by the company.
Johnson Brothers Indian Tree was produced over a period of many years, and some colour variations exist between batches. Plates used for making this particular three tier cake stand are dated circa 1940-50. All plates are appropriately backstamped and this particular backstamp has been used by Johnson Brothers pottery makers since 1913. I gave wider description to the Johnson Brothers Pottery makers history while doing my other listing for the shop and you can always refer to it if its the matter of your interest via link: https://www.etsy.com/sg-en/listing/235760804/exquisite-and-rare-collectable-and-well?ref=shop_home_active_8.
It is appropriate to mention that it is transferware pattern, but transferware is probably 50% of it actually, as technique of adding additional colours (on this patter you get at least five colours added)
is fully manual and involves hand painting. For that reason two plates are never the same and it makes each one absolutely unique.
There are other handmade cake stands using Johnson Brothers vintage plates and patterns among my shop listings, so you are always welcomed to browse entire cake stand collection.
