On every Michigan summer lake and pond there is a resident heron that stalks the shadows in search of frog and fish. "Shu shu' gah" (Anishinabe) is a fitting name for this prehistoric-looking birds as it glides over the water with strong wing-beat uttering its hoarse croak, "gawk!" This winged wizard of yellow eye, standing patient, unwasted energy, staring into the timelessness of swirling duckweed and dark water, offers strikes when ready.
